There's just something about a wide ribbon on a fedora that seems to generate both a powerful presence & a dramatic profile. When I see a fedora like this one, I'm reminded of the iconic lid Alain Delon wore in the classic film Le Samourai. Delon played a hired assassin who was handsome, stoic, cool, collected, and (of course) deadly. Although it's rendered in a slightly darker shade than Delon's famous fedora, this Resistol's proportions seem mighty close to the dimensions of the hat Delon wears like a talisman throughout the movie. That hat helped emphasize the coolly detached, brooding nature of Delon's character; if you're looking to do some brooding or cultivate a little cool detachment of your own, then this fedora might be just the ticket. Actually, whether you're a brooding assassin or just an average joe on his way to the fresh market to pick up some produce, a vintage fedora like this one will add a unique brand of dash to your profile. This fedora was manufactured by Resistol---one of America's leading hat companies during the golden era of men's style. Proportions, tags, and trimmings indicate this hat was manufactured in the mid 1950s. While Resistol may not be as well-remembered today as its close competitor Stetson, Resistol hats had a sterling reputation for quality construction & materials for much of the hat-rich first half of the 20th century. Around the time this hat was produced, Humphrey Bogart himself appeared in a series of ads for Resistol; if anyone knew how to wear a hat with style, it was Bogie. What's more, Bogart differed from most of the stars of that era in that he rarely agreed to endorse products---he lent his likeness to the Resistol hat ads because he wore `em & liked `em, buster. I have no doubt Bogart would have approved of the lid up for bids. This Resistol is beautifully rendered: classic proportions, wonderful color, terrific trimmings, and it looks hardly worn to boot. Moreover, it's a hard-to-find 7 1/4 extra-long-oval size. Check out all the pertinent specs in the size & condition statements below: Size & Dimensions: Tagged size 7 1/4 extra long oval (the "ELO" in the title had nothing to do with Jeff Lynne's old band). I measure the internal circumference (hard to do with absolute accuracy) as just shy of 22 3/4". Since sizing vintage hats can be tricky, a word to help you with size: I wear a 7 1/4 myself, and I have slight "long oval tendencies" (I'm not a true LO, let alone an ELO). I find this hat fits me, with a fair amount of extra wiggle room fore-and-aft. I think this hat should fit true to size; at the very least, I'm confident in saying that it fits like a 7 1/4 LO. If you're an ELO who's struggled with easing your vintage hats out to fit your head shape, you'll probably find this lid a welcome relief. Brim measures 2 1/8" wide; it's finished with a beautifully executed underwelt. Crown is just over 5 1/4" high (open). Black grosgrain ribbon is 2 1/4" wide! Check out the exquisite bow-work visible in the photos. Brown leather sweatband is comfortably wide at 1 3/4". Condition: Excellent! The fur felt is soft, smooth, pliable, and rich to the touch. You can apply your favorite fedora crease with a few deft flicks of your fingers. This hat boasts a marvelous finish: you won't find such a beautifully rendered felt hat on the shelves today---today's economies of scale make it prohibitively expensive for present-day hat makers to produce felt hats made with such quality & attention to detail. The felt exhibits no signs of wear, handling, or insect activity. The hat is rendered in a gorgeous shade of steel gray. I've taken the photos in natural light without flash to give you the best possible representation of this splendid color. Inside the hat, the brown leather sweatband is still soft & supple; it exhibits no significant signs of wear. Stamping in gold script is still crisp: "Devney's Men's Shop Painesville, Ohio" (the name of the original retailer). The "Resistol Self-Conforming" trademark is neatly blind-embossed & filled in with black ink on the sweatband's other side. All stitching is tight. The white satin liner is nice & clean and the clear plastic crown protector is intact. In short, this is a beautiful vintage fedora in near-mint condition. Finding a new factory-produced hat that offers this sort of quality in terms of design, materials, and construction is well-nigh impossible these days; furthermore, vintage examples in this kind of condition are becoming increasingly hard to find. Whether you're looking to evoke the troubled-and-brooding Alain Delon or the tough-but-sensitive Bogart, this hat will have you covered---to coin a phrase.
