If we're being precise, I'm not certain we can say the fedora up for bids is "vintage" in the normative sense of that term: the tags & trimmings on this Stetson indicate it was manufactured sometime in the last 10-20 years or so. Then again, I would suggest that precise nomenclature becomes less important when one is confronted with a hat as exquisite as this one. I'd certainly be one of the first to stand up & sing the praises of the quality of Stetson hats produced during the 30s, 40s, and 50s---I own many of them, & they're among my favorite lids. At the same time, I'm perfectly happy to acknowledge that the company currently producing hats with the Stetson brand ("HatCo") is capable of making some mighty fine fedoras. After all, HatCo isn't some fly-by-night foreign firm out to make a quick buck by exploiting a classic American brand; HatCo manufactures its fedoras in a facility in Garland, TX that has been in continuous operation for many years now. The company owns some of the John B. Stetson Company's original (now antique) manufacturing equipment, which it uses to produce some of the most splendid contemporary fedoras on the market today. Many hat aficionados believe that the best of these contemporary lids even approach the high style & quality construction found in their favorite vintage hats; this particular Stetson is unquestionably one of the best modern production hats out there: it's rendered in Stetson's Imperial quality felt---the company's top grade--and further refined in a process Stetson calls the "Ultimate Finish." Therefore, I think it's safe to say that while this Stetson Imperial may not be technically "vintage," in terms of its design, top-notch materials, and quality construction, it definitely qualifies as "vintage-inspired." For my part, I can say that this hat has both a look & feel that places it on a par with many of my vintage fedoras. In fact, I'd be keeping this lid to wear myself, if I didn't already own another hat in this color with similar proportions (I'm trying to keep my collection in check these days). In any case, this is a beautiful hat by any measure. Check out the size & condition statements below for all the pertinent specs & details: Size & Dimensions: Tagged size 7 1/4 or 58 cm internal circumference. I wear a 7 1/4 myself & I find this hat to be a good fit. Should fit true to size.Raw edge snap brim measures 2 1/4" wide. Crown is 5 1/4" high. Black grosgrain ribbon is 1 1/2" wide. Black leather sweatband is 1 5/8" wide. Condition: Impeccable. The fur felt boasts a truly wonderful finish: it is soft, lush, dense & yet somehow pliable at the same time. You can apply your favorite fedora crease with ease. The felt itself has a marvelous texture or "hand;" this hat is clearly the result of a painstaking (and expensive) finishing process. The hat is rendered in a rich charcoal gray color. I've taken the photos in natural light without flash to give you the best possible representation of this splendid shade. As I said, even though I'm partial to hats produced 60-70 years ago, I have to confess I really like this fedora's profile: the block shape, finishing, trimmings, and general proportions seem much more reminiscent of vintage styling than most of the fedoras produced today. Take a look at the various angles in the pics I've provided to see what I mean. I can find no signs of wear or handling on the hat. No stains, blemishes, or signs of insect activity. Inside the hat, the white satin lining is crisp & clean. The black leather sweatband exhibits no signs of wear. Stamping in gold script is still crisp: the Stetson logo, "The Imperial Stetson," "Ultimate Finish," and "Shudde Bros. Houston" (the name of the original retailer). All stitching is nice & tight. Finally, the bow is adorned with a discreet gold-tone pin shaped like the world-famous Stetson crest---a suitably regal touch for an Imperial Stetson. The sort of quality construction I've just described doesn't come cheap: Stetson's current Imperial line is priced in the $180--200 range. This auction is your chance to acquire one of the very best offerings from America's top contemporary hat maker at a fraction of the retail price. If this fedora fits, don't let it get away!
